The plywood walls are sealed with a protective clear coat that offers temporary weather protection, generally lasting through the first year or two. Painting over the clear coat is not required in the first year, but strongly recommended after the second year to extend the life of your hive. The top cover comes pre-painted in white marine-grade paint, giving it a highly durable and water-resistant surface right out of the box. Brazilian Walnut hardwood is used on all the structural edges – including all box rims, the full screened bottom board, and the edge frame of the inner cover – because this is where moisture damage typically begins in most hives. Each insulated cover (top and bottom) helps reduce thermal stress on your colony during both winter and summer. This version comes complete with six pre-installed deep frames and plastic foundation for each deep box, eliminating the need to purchase or assemble frames separately. |
